Why are our hedges so high in summer? 10 july 2021
At the Ferme de l'Airbois, there are more than 400m of hedges and we never cut them before August 1st. In July they have plenty of time to grow and eventually double in size! What a job afterwards to cut them and get rid of everything that has been cut!
And yet it is worth it. These old rustic hedges (beech, holly, hawthorn, rosa rugosa, hornbeam...) are of great importance for biodiversity. Between May and July, many birds nest and feed in them. Near the pond, they are also a refuge for toads and hedgehogs.
Like late mowing, trimming the hedges in August allows this little world to thrive.
